As a first generation American of Vietnamese heritage Betty Nguyen, proprietor of Thanh Thanh restaurant in Gretna, embodies the fulfillment of the American dream. Born to Vietnamese parents who came to Panama City, Florida in 1975, Betty is the oldest of 13 children. Her father was a fisherman and her mother's passion for food and the kitchen led them to family businesses of a seafood store, a sandwich shop, and catering. Betty learned cooking, kitchen creativity and her work ethic from birth.
The family's move to the New Orleans area led to a high school diploma from Blenk High School in 1994 and to three years at Loyola University, but it was her mother's dream to own a restaurant that called Betty and her large family to open the first Thanh Thanh in Algiers. Thanh Thanh was a great lunch success; yet Betty had dreams of expanding to a popular dining spot with good food, relaxed dining, and cultural ambience.
Coincidentally, the dream expansion became possible when Mother's Restaurant in the heart of Old Gretna, just off the ferry on Huey P. Long Avenue, went up for sale. Betty loved the atmosphere, and the new Thanh Thanh, which means “Light Blue on a Clear Day,” was born. The team of Betty and her mother Viet create authentic Asian inspired cuisine with their own unique twists. Such a successful dish is Mama's Pad Thai Noodles, one of their most popular offerings.
Two features of the Décor serve as emblems of Betty Nguyen's success: Above on the ceiling, the Light Blue Sky of Dreams; at eye level, a three-panel photo of a worker in a rice field. Betty says that the worker serves as a reminder of the value of hard work. Betty believes that you must put our actions in your dreams. That's why she's up at 4 a.m. and not home until 10 p.m. Betty and her mother fulfill their shared dream each time a unique creation is set before a Thanh Thanh customer.
